Rufini et al. provide an excellent case study of drug repurposing using a known drug, Etravirine, an antiretroviral used to treat human immunodeficiency (HIV)-infected patients. Here Etravirine was used to treat Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA) an autosomal-recessive disease characterized by gait instability and loss of muscle coordination. Rufini et al. discuss the process of uncovering this new purpose of Etravirine, including the screening of a Selleck Chem library currently held by the UM Drug Repurposing Center. Furthermore, several follow-up experiments are examined and highlighted in this paper that elucidate the method of action of Etravirine in treating FRDA.
